Trail Reports

2017-2018 season

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Skied Silver, Ski Games, and WC trails at noon. All trails but Ski Games were freshly track and in very good late winter condition. Ski Games was a little ruff because of walkers and it hadn't been groomed in a few days. There is plenty of snow there. Skate lane looked great, smooth and flat. Just a few spots starting to get sun burn out.

[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Skied the gold loop (which was beginning to soften up but still holding up well with a couple bare spots) and the ski games loop (which is always fun and provides good birdwatching, but is pretty damaged due to foot traffic). Had a great time on a beautiful warm and sunny afternoon. Today is very likely my last ski of the season. Thank you 2017-18 season, you were amazing! Also many thanks to the volunteer groom crew - your skilled work is much appreciated!

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Groomed and reset tracks on the Easy, Bronze, Silver and Gold. The Ski Games side was not re-groomed. Very good skating and classic conditions throughout the system with just a few minor icy areas and/or small sections of bare ground that are easily avoided. There are also more twigs appearing in certain areas as the more intense sun hits the trails, but not a real issue if you are careful. Use B skis if you have a concern. These are the best March conditions that we have had at Battle Creek in several years. Get out and enjoy it while you can.

[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Skied the entire outer loop on the west, including the 3.6km across the road. The conditions were good considering the weather lately. There were a couple bad bare spots, lots of debris on the trail, and several icy spots. I was little nervous using my good skis, but really wanted to take advantage of my last few good ski days. I plan on skiing Battle Creek much more next season to work on my hill form. It was an excellent workout.

Ski Games trail is pretty decent for classic with some icy and rutted areas but who can complain for March skiing. This has been one of the best season for snow coverage.

Grooming

Bronze, Silver and Gold trails repacked. Some new classic tracks set; other existing tracks still in good shape. A few bare and icy spots but, overall, trails in very good condition.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Battle Creek West was groomed this morning - Silver, Gold, and Ski Games loops. Classic track set on Ski Games and Silver (from the first climb back to the trailhead). Due to the wind, snow in the prairie is inconsistent, leaving some icy patches, clearly visible and avoidable. Otherwise trails are in great shape.

Was lucky to arrive in the middle of grooming this morning with a carload of kids from Highland Park in St. Paul. The Silver trail was done and excellent for skating - minus the already mentioned sections by the groomer. Skated the Ski Games trails before they were regroomed this morning and was passable but not as good as the newly groomed skate deck across the road. The Gold trail was also in great shape after grooming. Was surprised about how much snow was still there and how much of an edge I was able to get on the downhills especially. Tracks are there mostly, but look icy after all the melting and refreezing. Thanks much to the groomers for their work this morning.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Groomed entire system this morning. Multiple passes required on skate deck to remove skate marks and footprints. We were mostly successful but some of the deep footprints are impossible to remove. Skiers reported they were able to get an edge and enjoyed the trail. There are several easily avoidable ice areas that can not be renovated. Watch out on the sharp turn in the southwest corner on the Gold trail. Also a few spots where the trail is receding in from the edge. The classic tracks were reset on the Bronze and Ski Games segments. Bronze results are mixed from excellent to non-existent. Ski Games tracks are mostly excellent.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
All skate trails were combed this morning. Tracks are not set on the A climb but are good every where else. New track set on the Ski Games trail. Battle Creek is holding up well with good snow depth. No problem using good equipment. We are planning on grooming again Friday morning.
